How One Youth’s Invention Saved Animals & People

Such an amazing story about 13-year-old Kenyan Richard Turere…and he was able to tell his story at a TED2013 talk last month!

Richard used his knowledge about lions and added a small light and solar panel to create a lion deterrent, saving not only the local livestock, but people’s spirits too.It’s no coincidence that the theme of TED2013 was The Young. Volunteers are still needed for Canada’s first ever Victoria Teen Expo! It’s a one-day event featuring a HUGE number of workshops and exhibitors…all for teens! The expo takes place April 27th, at Pearks Rec Centre.

Skills BC Competition- Hairstyling at Belmont

Belmont Cosmetology students, Shantelle, Tanis & Heather finish off the dying process during the 1st Test.

While all the other students have the day off, these Cosmetology students from SD62, Saanich & Victoria school districts are working on their feet ALL day in the Skills BC Competition. 1st Test- Cut, colour and style. 2nd test- Formal up-do’s.

The winner of this competition will then move on to compete in the Provincial Skills Competition on April 17th.

Math is Fun? Yes & GeoBurst Proves it!

Students at Dunsmuir had a great mathematical “treat” on Monday with a workshop lead by Mathematician, Alejandro Erikson. Erikson and his fiancee, Kassia run GeoBurst and Match Catcher- great interactive workshops for students.

Their Mission: “GeoBurst mission is to Create Zest for Mathematics. By sharing our love for this subject, we hope to spread an enthusiasm for mathematics that will shine a positive light on a challenging subject for all of us.”
