Americas Rugby Tourney on West Shore!

 

A HUGE event is coming to our very own West Shore! The Americas Rugby Championship takes place at Bear Mountain Stadium on October 12, 16 & 20th!

 

With the Canadian Rugby teams located on the West Shore, it was only a matter of time before a big event like this happened. We will host teams from:

  • USA
  • Argentina
  • Uruguay

It will be great for the entire family, so go see some amazing athletes play in our own backyard!

As some of you know, I contribute a monthly article to the West Shore’s What’s Up magazine. As highlighted in the September edition, there are a lot of changes taking place within the SD62 Board Office.To help keep everyone a bit more informed, here are only some of the new additions and changes:

  • Harold Cull, Secretary-Treasurer
  • Roberta Kubik, Assistant Superintendent
  • Vivian Collyer, District Principal- Curriculum and Programs
  • Connie Allsopp, District Principal- Student Services
  • Jennifer Paget, Director- Finance
  • Frazer Johnson, Manager- Finance
  • Brian Gordon, Transportation Supervisor

On top of that, a number of schools in SD62 have new Principals and Vice Principals. Please make sure you introduce yourself!

Back to School Information

The two-week countdown is on!

The malls are bustling with back-to-school shoppers, and I’m sure parents are trying to hide their excitement!

For new and returning students, check out September 2012 Registration and Start Times for information about Kindergarten to Grade 12. This can be found under the Important Items / Updates column on the SD62 website.

Information will also be available this week in the Goldstream Gazette. If you have any concerns or questions, please give the board office a call at: (250) 474-9800.

Meet the Founders of SD62’s Nature Kindergarten

A representative from Royal Roads University speaks with professor Enid Elliot and SD62’s Francis Krusekopf about what the 21 students in Nature Kindergarten can expect to learn during this exciting pilot project.

The students will attend Sangster Elementary and explore the forests of neighboring Royal Roads University each morning, rain or shine.

What a Fantastic National Aboriginal Day!

Students from Dunsmuir and representatives from SD62’s Nature Kindergarten and Aboriginal Education programs were at Royal Roads University yesterday to celebrate National Aboriginal Day.

With lot’s of traditional drumming, dancing and performance, it was great to be part of celebrating and recognizing the Aboriginal groups in and around the West Shore! Thank you!

Belmont Grad Finalist in BCSSA Essay Scholarship Program

Congratulations to Grade 12 Belmont student, Taylor Bourne on his fantastic essay A Personal Approach to Education!

Not only is Taylor a finalist in the Vancouver Island Chapter of the BCSSA Grade 12 Essay Scholarship Program, he also takes home a $200 award!

Here’s a small snip bit of Taylor’s award-winning essay:

“With personalized learning no kid is left behind or slowed down because everyone is accommodated to their understanding of the subject.”

Public Open Houses for New Schools- Round #2

We’ve collected a lot of feedback from the public, stakeholders, teachers, students and administrators. We’ve compiled all the feedback and now we’re ready to show you our findings before sending it to the board of education for approval and, eventually, on to the gov’t for their approval. We’re getting closer!

Everyone is welcome to come to one or both of the public open houses being held:

  • Wednesday, June 13th: 5 – 8 p.m. North Gym at Belmont
  • Saturday, June 16th: 12 – 3 p.m. North Gym at Belmont

Top Chef Canada is Carl Heinrich!!

Congratulations to SD62 alumni Carl Heinrich for winning Top Chef Canada- Season 2!!! We are thrilled for you and can’t wait to see where this new title will take you.

A grad from EMCS’ Culinary Arts program in 2003, Carl clearly shows us how great the programs in SD62 are. As a huge bonus for us, Carl will be this years guest speaker to the 2012 grads of EMCS on June 10th. Last year’s winner of Top Chef Canada also came from BC. Congrats again Carl! Check out the story in yesterday’s Vancouver Sun.

SD62 Alumni Heads to Final of Top Chef Canada #2!

We are so excited to see former SD62 student Carl Heinrich make it to the final round of Top Chef Canada, Season 2. The finale is TONIGHT at 10 p.m. the Food Network. Go Carl, GO!

SD62 Alumni, Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d’Italia!!!

Congratulation to Ryder for this MASSIVE win! Ryder has made history by becoming the first Canadian ever to win one of cycling’s three major stage races- the 2012 Giro d’Italia on May 27, 2012!

In an article in the Vancouver Sun yesterday, Ryder said,

“I think it’s going to take a while to sink in,”on a conference call with reporters in North America a few hours after his victory. “Once I start to see my name on the list of other riders who’ve accomplished this, it’s pretty amazing. I’m just enjoying it right now.”

Ryder was part of the School Bike League at Spencer Middle School & he graduated from Belmont.
