Every once in a while it is important to recognize the amazing employees that we have in the SD62. Last night, we recognized a number of retirees and long service employees. Congrats to all our super employees!!

Metchosin Tech Teacher Only Cnd to Win Amgen Award!!

HUGE congratulations to Metchosin Tech teacher, Laura Verhoeven!

Laura is the only teacher in Canada to receive the 2012 Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence (AASTE)! Verhoeven was honoured today for her outstanding ability to inspire students in science education.

As part of her award, Verhoeven received $5,000. Metchosin Technical Centre: Pacific Secondary School also received $5,000 to go towards the expansion or enhancement of a school science program, science resources, or the professional development of the school’s science teachers.

EMCS Students on CBC Radio re: Aboriginal Grad Rates

Brody White and Mahalia Nahanee of EMCS, did a great job on the CBC radio this morning. The students answered questions about aboriginal education and why SD62 has such a high percentage of Aboriginal grads this year.

You did a great job! Thanks for representing SD62 so well. We’re proud of you!

John Stubb’s Student 2nd in National French Speech Competition!

Congratulations to John Stubbs grade 7 Late Immersion student India Hounsome, who won second place in the Canadian Parents for French Provincial French Speech competition in Burnaby on May 5. India competed against 20 other grade 7 Late Immersion students from school districts all over BC and the Yukon.

A total of six SD62 students travelled to Burnaby in order to compete in the annual event. Grade 12 provincial winners travel to Ottawa for the National speech competition in order and compete for a university scholarship.

Belmont Film Gets 1st Runner Up in Province-Wide Contest

With their minute-long film “Through the Eyes“, Belmont students, Brandon Gregor, Jon Bond, Dylan Grant and Cole Penner received first runner up in the Vancouver Sun’s Student Video Awards. Out of nearly 170 submissions, “Through the Eyes” ranked high in the category for best Public Service Announcement.

Shot in black and white, “Through the Eyes” takes a look at gang membership through the eyes of a gang member.

Under the supervision of teacher Lori Haddon, Belmont entered five films into the Public Service Announcement category in this year’s inaugural contest.

The Game“- What a bad decision looks like: The consequences of being in a gang. By Shanisse Bandet & Melody Sidhu.

SD62 Keeps One-Week Spring Break

During last night’s monthly Board meeting, the SD62 Board of Education approved the standard school calendar for next year, keeping a one-week long spring break in SD62. The one-week spring break will remain in place for the 2012/2013 school year.

EMCS Students Interview on CBC Radio!

Brody and Gage, Grade 12 students at EMCS, were interviewed last Friday at the Truth & Reconciliation Commission event in Victoria.

Both Brody and Gage did a fantastic job talking about what they have learned about the residential school system in Canada, how it has affected their communities and how they are going to pass the message of hope and optimism to their peers.
