School Spirit in New Mural

Edward Milne Community School is strengthening their sense of culture and belonging with a new school mural! The mural captures the natural beauty of the Sooke landscape and includes the school mascot, the Wolverine! EMCS has engaged with artist Steve Milroy of Wonderworks Murals to develop a mural sketch that will stretch across one wall in the gym. The piece will measure an astounding 60 by 25 feet!

This isn’t only a work of art, but a community project as EMCS is seeking mural sponsors for the following table:

  • Per square foot: $20
  • Per Ten Square Feet: $150
  • Per One Hundred Square Feet: $1200

EMCS is also going to display a scaled and framed version of the mural in the school, recognizing your contributions.

December 4th marks Belmont Secondary’s annual 10,000 Tonight food drive! If you live in the Langford and Colwood area expect a knock on your door between 5-8pm for non- perishable food items. All items will be donated to the Goldstream Food Bank to help feed the community. This year we have two grade twelve students organizing the drive, Hope Robinson and Haley More.

We are currently in need of volunteers who can drive and have a vehicle. Volunteers can bring their significant others, children, and friends along, and/or be matched up with some of Belmont’s finest student volunteers. Please email belmontten@gmail.com if you want to volunteer.

If you want to donate and don’t live in the neighborhood you can drop off your non-perishable food items to Belmont Secondary’s main office during school hours from December 2-6.

Lets reach 10,000 items!

Raise the Rates!

Five Social Justice students from Belmont Secondary took on the “Raise the Rates” challenge to bring awareness to the amount of money the government allocates to those living on social assistance. After paying rent and the regular bills, there is roughly $26 dollars a week left for food. The students took their $26 dollars to the grocery store and purchased items such as Zoodles, granola bars, eggs, cans of tuna, apples and bananas. And how did they do? Only one of the five students made it to day six.  The grade 12 students found that eating roughly 500 calories a day made it difficult to focus in school and left them with low levels of energy. One student, Mathew Pounden, lost four pounds, only making it to day three of the challenge. The students experienced first-hand what it’s like to live with the bare minimum and plan on writing a letter to the government asking them to raise the social assistant rates.
